  • What should I know about depression medications?

When you are prescribed to take medication for depression, you should be informed the type of medication it is. SSRI's are the most common that providers will prescribed. if you are not allergic to them. They have fewer side effects but when beginning to take them you may feel mildly tired or dizzy. Driving a vehicle is not encouraged until you get used to taking them. If symptoms don't lift notify your provider you may need the dose adjusted. Also be aware that it may take 10-14 days or even longer before you start to feel better. If needed your provider may prescribe another medication along with the anti-depressant like Abilify (atypical antipsychotic) which seems to work well together. It is advised to communicate to provider if any adverse side effects occur ex. immediately notify provider of suicidal thoughts.Increased movements (tardive Dyskinesia).

  • What are the lifestyle changes I can make to lower my blood pressure, and when is medication necessary?

You may have to make dietary changes(reduce salt and fried foods) increase fresh vegetables and fruits. Practice stress management. Deep breathing exercises and stretching (yoga) Also exercise and also consider making stressful lifestyle adjustments. Example exercise ,walking at least 10 minutes 3x a week with MD's consent.
