What made you choose a career in nursing?
GROWING UP MY GRANDPARENTS WERE LIKE THE HOSPICE HOME FOR OUR FAMILY/EXTENDED FAMILY. SO GROWING UP I WAS VERY HANDS ON IN CARING FOR SICK RELATIVES OR RELATIVES AT THE END OF THEIR LIFE. I ALWAYS FELT I WAS DOING SOMETHING THAT REALLY MATTERED AND HELPED THE FAMILY MEMBER WE WERE CARING FOR AT THE TIME. IT GAVE ME A SENSE OF HUMBLENESS CARING FOR SOMEONE DURING SUCH A VULNERABLE TIME FOR THEM. I KNEW FROM AN EARLY AGE THAT I WANTED TO HELP PEOPLE. HENCE I WENT INTO NURSING.
What Do You Attribute Your Success To?
I ATTRIBUTE MY SUCCESS TO MY FATHER. HE TAUGHT ME A PHILOSOPHY ABOUT LIFE THAT I CLING TO TODAY. IT'S A PHILOSOPHY THAT HAS SHAPED MY APPROACH TO NURSING. HE ALWAYS LOOKED FOR THE GOOD IN EVERYONE, FOCUSED ON A PERSON'S STRENGTH AND NOT THEIR WEAKNESS, ALWAYS DEMONSTRATED LOVE AND COMPASSION, NEVER JUDGED BECAUSE YOU DON'T ALWAYS KNOW A PERSON'S STORY. HE ALWAYS KEPT A POSITIVE OUTLOOK AND NEVER LET ANYTHING KEEP HIM FROM MOVING FORWARD.
What motivates you at the start of each day?
MANY THINGS MOTIVATE ME AT THE START OF EACH DAY. MY CHILDREN, MY HUSBAND, OUR DOG CHANCE WHO IS ALWAYS BY MY SIDE. EVERY MORNING I MAKE A POINT OF SAYING SOMETHING MY DAD ALWAYS SAID..."I AM ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, BUT THE DAY IS YOUNG AND IT'S ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER." IT IS ALSO PRETTY MOTIVATING KNOWING I GET TO GO TO WORK AND DO WHAT I LOVE every day.
How do you make a difference in the lives of your patients?
My approach is one that encompasses treating the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. I understand that no two people are alike and that in order to truly help my patients that I must see them as a whole person and not just a diagnosis or symptoms. I practice with the philosophy that everyone has strengths and building on these strengths we can accomplish individual wellness and growth. I provide psychiatric diagnosis and medication management utilizing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities. These are based on current evidence-based practice and clinical guidelines. I understand the importance of staying up to date on the latest research available to better serve my patients. I also treat my patients as I would want someone to treat my family or myself.
Research Interests
I developed a nursing theory that I presented at Sigma Theta Tau International 44th Biennial Convention which focused on the experience of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.
