What made you choose a career in nursing?
I am a firm believer in the powerful message of Philippians 2:15; which states, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” In addition, I am also a firm believer in the powerful message of Ecclesiastes 3:1; which states that, “every endeavor man can undertake has its own time and meaning.” Looking back on my life, I see these different endeavors as stages of growth that have helped me to understand my own potential and the path that I wish to take in life. I feel that I have lived above and beyond the laws of dreams, and now I wish to apply the valuable life lessons I have gained to what I feel is my true calling. Now is the opportunity to continue exploring the fascinating world of nursing and community health, and to finally make the dream a reality. As a child, I never believed I could succeed. Growing up in my grandparents’ home and having them as my primary Guardians, I lack the stability that a youth needs in order to excel in classes and build a proper foundation for the future. I was pregnant by the age of twenty-one, and was not successful at getting into nursing school my first couple of tries. It was very difficult to attend school full time and work two jobs, but I know I had to forge a future for my family. Life was difficult, but fulfilling. I found much joy in being a single parent to one lovely little boy, continuing to reside in the home of my grandparents. The day my grandfather was diagnosed with throat cancer and lung cancer I begin to see all of my happiness vanish before my eyes. Lung cancer and throat cancer, in either case were both terminal and debilitating. The doctors gave my
grandfather a life expectancy of six months. Swallowing my shock and sorrow, I devoted myself to making the most of the precious time I had left with my grandfather. I researched intensively on throat and lung cancer, learning as much as I could about its
treatments, mechanisms, course it would run and how it affected the community of which I resided. I applied these lessons to caring for my grandfather, and provided him with the twenty four-hour a day care that he required. Because I was afraid of the time that would come for him to expire, I rally left his side; of course this did not do much for my grades. He expired recently at the age of sixty-seven, long past his expectancy, which the doctors attributed to my constant care.
Being the intimate witness to the struggle of life and death left me with a deep sense of human fragility. I realize that the human body is so very intricate and beautiful in its complex delicacy. Working closely with doctors as a nurse, volunteering in the community, and nursing a very ill grandfather gave me a taste of community health and nursing. In addition, I gained the confidence and communication skills to fight for my rights as a businesswoman. I know very well the horrors of poverty, and often perform services for the local community organizations that contribute to several charities. As my life finally begin to stabilize, I decided that the time has come to think about the dream of continuing education in community and nursing that had grown during my grandfathers illness.
I am currently working at several joint commissioned and accredited healthcare facilities through the staffing organizations. As a candidate, I possess excellent communication skills, promote a team atmosphere to ensure quality patient care as well as leadership, teaching and management skills. I possess advanced certifications and experience in healthcare. I am a self-starter with good people and computer skills including Microsoft Office. I am able to perform independently and possess a working knowledge of the clinical setting. Additionally, I strive to prepare myself for making meaningful contributions to my community.
I believe that as a nurse, I must be attuned to all of the needs of the patient, be it community, education, physical, emotional, or cultural. Now is the occasion for me to tackle my true dream of community, leadership, and nursing. I believe that all of my life experiences have been necessary to bring me to this point. I am mentally prepared and persistent enough to excel at any endeavor, and I have developed the compassion and commitment in nursing that will drive me through the years to come. I look forward to my future with great anticipation, and know that the time has finally come for me to achieve my dreams.
