Brief summary of your nursing background
Started my nursing career on neurological/medical floor as floor nurse in 1995 after graduating from College at Bassett in Cooperstown NY. Next job was a year at a country physician office in Pennsylvania. I returned home to New York to Bassett Hospital to the same neurological/medical floor as a floor nurse. In 1997 I return to my home town Cortland NY to Cortland Memorial Hospital as a charge nurse on a medical/surgical floor. The floor specialization in chemotherapy and orthopedics. I helped start up a Prompt Care department at Cortland Memorial Hospital - I did administration duties, RN duties, and billing duties. I moved on to a new adventure at Cortland County Health Department to be a Public Health RN Team Leader. I manage a caseload of 25 patients making home care visits. Home care is my specialty. I returned back to Cortland Regional Medical Center in 2003 (formerly known as Cortland Memorial Hospital) part time as a floor nurse until a position opened in the Long Term Home Health Care Program in 2007. I started as a Care Manager to maintain patients in their home as long as possible for long term placement in a facility. In 2012 after I obtained my MSN/MHA I developed a new position in the home care department as a Team Leader - I supervised 4 part time RN care managers. In 2015 I was promoted to the Director of Patient Services (the boss) of the department. After a hard decision due to family issues I changed position as a RN Care Manager in a physician office. I helped develop the care manager position for the physician office to obtain Patient Centered Medical Home status for Family Medicine and Internal Medicine offices.
What made you choose a career in nursing?
Her grandmother Mildred told her she should be a nurse and her grandma usually knew best. She also believed that by being a nurse she would be a step closer to making a difference.
What Do You Attribute Your Success To?
Taking chances, being passionate about her career and just her natural love for taking care of others.
What motivates you at the start of each day?
Nursing really helped her grow as a person as well. She was able to come out of her shell and develop her personality.
How do you make a difference in the lives of your patients?
I allow patients to tell their stories. I learn a lot by allowing the patients to talk about their concerns, fears, and hopes. When a patient or family do not understand something I take the time to break it down to a level they are at and provide them time to ask the questions. I met the patient and family where they are at and I respect them.
