Work Description / Areas of Expertise / Job Duties
I own my own solo practice, Monarch Holistic Healing, which is a unique practice designed to help children with chronic diseases such as asthma, allergies, ADHD, anxiety, or IBD, reduce prescription medications and their side effects. I use an integrated approach with complimentary and alternative medicine. Some examples include vitamins, minerals, diet, nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathy, relaxation and stress relief, and environmental changes to improve sleep and allergy relief.

As a Clinical Instructor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, I teach Nurse Practitioner students history-taking and physical examination skills. An important part of teaching includes assessment, ordering labs and tests, diagnosis, and creating and organizing an individualized treatment plan.

In pediatric private practice at Pediatric Partners of Towson, MD, I enjoyed a specialty practice for adolescent and young adult women for GYN and female issues. I also had hospital privileges at GBMC, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, for newborn admissions.

One main concern I kept hearing from parents was that they intensely disliked giving their child prescription meds every day for their childs allergy, asthma, ADHD, IBD, constipation, or other chronic health problem. Yet, mainstream medicine doesnt know a lot about CAM- Complementary and Alternative Medicine. So, I found a certificate degree in Anti-aging Medicine to learn evidence-based treatments using vitamins, minerals, herbs, and nutritional supplements. During this, I felt I needed a new model of health and wellness besides the mechanical and mostly physical approach of modern medicine. I wanted a holistic approach, one that understands and uses a mind-body-spirit approach. So, I went to The Tai Sophia Institute in Laurel, MD, now known as Maryland University of Integrated Health, and completed the certificate program as a Health Coach. This was a life-transforming experience for me!
Brief summary of your nursing background
As an RN, I worked as a Newborn Nursery nurse. I also worked as a Community Health Nurse for Baltimore City, in well baby clinics, family planning clinics, school health, STD clinic, and home visits for new mothers and babies.

After attaining my masters degree as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, I taught inpatient undergraduate Pediatric nursing at University of Maryland School of Nursing. I took students to an adolescent unit, a general pediatric inpatient unit, and a rehabilitative pediatric inpatient unit.
What made you choose a career in nursing?
Even as a young child, I was always attracted to a helping vocation and once told my family I was going to be a baby doctor! Well, I became a nurse and my first job as an RN was in the Newborn Nursery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. I have 2 aunts who also were nurses, so I guess it runs in the family.
What Do You Attribute Your Success To?
Hard work and continuing my education.
What motivates you at the start of each day?
Talking with children and families to discern their concerns and coming up with a plan designed for the patient. I like to solve problems and I try to see the whole picture as well as the small concerns that make each of us unique.
How do you make a difference in the lives of your patients?
I am genuine, caring, listen closely and help patients implement a plan of care they help create.
Research Interests
Effective treatments for chronic problems in children. Thinking outside the box to get to the actual root of a problem and not just being complacent with treating a few symptoms, but not the whole person. While Im not leading any research, I am always searching for research that makes a real difference in the lives of children and which improves their quality of life at the same time.
