We take care of the elderly, adults and children with special needs and learning disabilities especially those with Autism. My current title is Nurse Administrator/ Supervisor. My areas of expertise include geriatric nursing, nurse management, supervision, community health nursing, home care, and pediatrics which focuses on special needs and Autistic children. My job duties are as follows: develop education programs and staff development, policies and procedures, and a yearly budget. Evaluate and give feedback to nurses in the home care setting along with the main office employees which includes the Office Administrator, Scheduler, and Administrative Assistant. Provide leadership and guide all staff, make sure everyone is properly trained, monitor adequate patient care, use evidence-based nursing standards and interact with patients to handle problems and check that proper care is given.
Brief summary of your nursing background
I graduated from Kettering College of Medical Arts in Kettering, Ohio in 1987. I first began my nursing career working on an oncology floor at Kettering Hospital. I married shortly after graduating and moved to Charleston, South Carolina on our year anniversary where I worked at Medical University of South Carolina on a Pediatric Cardiology Step-down unit, Neonatal ICU, and Pediatric Medical Surgical floor. I next was offered a job in Columbia, SC to supervise a home care business of 77 employees and work home health. In 1995, I opened Caring Healthcare, Inc with another business owner and are still successfully in business today providing excellent care to private and Medicaid patients in the community. During this time, I received my Certificate of Managed Care Nursing in October of 2015 and graduated with my BSN from University of Texas at Arlington.
What made you choose a career in nursing?
I chose a career in nursing since I have always been interested in the human body and loved the thought of taking care of others and making a difference in their lives. The idea of becoming a nurse was very exciting and interesting. I remember the excitement of my classes at KCMA as I was able to see actual body parts such as the heart and brain in A&P class, watch an actual open-heart surgery and even an autopsy.
What Do You Attribute Your Success To?
I first attribute all my success to my belief in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as I am nothing without Him. Secondly, I have a very strong work ethic along with being able to persevere. Lastly, my family is a solid, loving support system who has always been there to support me in all I do .
What motivates you at the start of each day?
I am motivated to begin each day as I know I am hear to make a difference in others lives which, at times, excites me to see what the Lord has in store for a particular day. For instance, I often text encouraging thoughts to others when I awaken and then have them text back how they needed to hear a kind and reassuring word filled with hope brings me joy. I also love to see the difference my company is making is so many lives.
How do you make a difference in the lives of your patients?
I make a difference in the lives of my patients by working as a team with those at my company as we put the patient's care first since we want them to experience the best care we have to offer. An example is by sending the best employee to a home to care for a patient who is failing and having the son or daughter call to thank us for helping and making a difference since he or she was at the end and felt there was no where to turn. Also, it is so nice to see my employees and / or patients thank me for sincere words of support that were desperately needed. To hear the gratitude for our company and the positive words others say makes what I do worth while.
Research Interests
The areas of interest that I research deal with areas of nursing that directly impact my patients in the home. These include but are not limited to prevention and risk of falls in the home especially with the elderly, what to do should a fall occur and how to keep it from happening again, how to prevent readmissions after being discharged from the hospital, dangers of polypharmacy, and how strength training and exercise can help the elderly with fall-related injuries.

More About Me
I currently live in South Carolina with my wonderful husband Alex and my precious daughter who has and is still teaching me to persevere and be thankful for every day I am alive. She has battled a brain tumor since 2011 and has had six brain surgeries with the last and final one being in September of 2016. She is still dealing with a couple post-op conditions but handles them with courage and strength. She also has such a love for others and Jesus and demonstrates forgiveness and kindness wherever she goes. There are many times I look at her as an example of who I want to be; and she is only 18.
